When it comes to getting a puppy, one of the most common questions is: why are documents necessary? At first glance, it may seem that if the puppy is healthy, cute, and looks like a “real retriever,” then papers are not essential. Many future owners even add: “We want the puppy just for our home, not for shows – do you have one cheaper without papers?”

This way of thinking is widespread, yet it hides many misconceptions. A pedigree certificate is not meant only for show dogs. It confirms the puppy’s ancestry, the parents’ health checks, and proves that the breeding was carefully planned. It is not an extra – it is an important part of your dog’s future.

What Are FCI and LKC?

Golden Retriever pedigrees are internationally recognized because in Lithuania the system is managed by the Lithuanian Kennel Club (LKC) – the only official organization representing Lithuania in the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

The LKC is responsible for kennel registration, litter records, and the issuing of pedigree certificates.

It is important to note that the LKC does not issue documents unless the puppy’s parents have passed mandatory health examinations. For Golden Retrievers, this includes: eye tests performed by accredited veterinarians (repeated every two years), hip and elbow dysplasia X-ray screening (once in a lifetime after the age of one year), DNA parentage testing to confirm lineage.

Additionally, every puppy born in an LKC-registered kennel is microchipped, and the identification number must be recorded on the pedigree. You can check whether a puppy is officially registered through the public LKC Studbook system at e-kinologija.lt.

Parts of the Pedigree – What Do They Mean?

The pedigree certificate includes not only the puppy’s name, date of birth, and breed. The most important section is the genealogical table showing several generations of ancestors. You may find champion titles, health results, or even working ability evaluations listed there.

These records reveal much more than you might think at first glance. They show how breeders from different countries have worked, competed, and proved to the world that their dog is beautiful, healthy, and worthy of becoming a sire or dam.

Today it is easier than ever to explore this heritage: you can often find photos of ancestors, their stories, or even contact the breeders who contributed to your puppy’s lineage many years ago. What seems like just a document turns into a living story of dedication and love for the breed.

What Happens When a Puppy Is Sold Without Documents?

We often hear the phrase: “a puppy without documents, but a real retriever.” Unfortunately, in such cases the buyer takes a risk – there is no guarantee of ancestry, no proof of health checks, and no assurance that the dog will meet the breed’s qualities. Such puppies may have genetic problems, and their appearance or temperament may differ from the traits that make Golden Retrievers so beloved.

The Most Common Myths About Pedigrees:

  • “Documents are only for shows.” – False. A pedigree primarily confirms a puppy’s ancestry and that its parents were selected according to FCI and LKC requirements. This means they passed mandatory health checks and met the breed standard, providing the buyer with much more clarity and security.

  • “Puppies with documents cost more.” – Naturally, because a pedigree proves that the breeder invested in health testing, selective breeding, and proper conditions for the litter.

  • “Anyone can make documents.” – False. Each pedigree certificate is issued only for LKC-registered litters under strict rules. The dog itself must have a pedigree certification, undergo health checks, and attend shows where judges evaluate not only its anatomy according to the breed standard but also its temperament. This ensures that future owners receive a well-balanced, healthy Golden Retriever with a verified origin.

What Do Our Puppies’ Documents Look Like?

In our kennel, every puppy leaves for its new home with an official LKC-issued, FCI-recognized pedigree certificate. This is not a formality – it is a reliable foundation that accompanies the dog throughout its life. The document proves that the puppy descends from carefully planned lines where health and character were the top priorities.

With your puppy, you will receive documents bearing the official LKC and FCI logos, information about parents and ancestors, the microchip number, and validation with the LKC seal and an authorized signature. All puppies born in LKC-registered kennels are microchipped, and their numbers are always reflected in the pedigree.

If you wish to verify a puppy’s registration, you can always check it in the public LKC system at e-kinologija.lt.

Final Thoughts

A pedigree is not “just a piece of paper in the drawer”. It provides clarity about a puppy’s ancestry, health checks, and the continuation of the breed. It is proof that your puppy comes from parents whose health and temperament were tested, and from a carefully planned lineage supported by a global community of breeders.

By choosing a puppy with documents, you are choosing certainty, knowledge, and peace of mind. This allows you to look to the future with confidence and enjoy the companionship of a true Golden Retriever.
